Local holidays and traditions in Avila
Most of the festivities and traditions in Avila were born with a religious character, even though other lively activities are often added, rooted within the city’s folklore and customs.
The following ones are some of them:
St. Segundo, city’s Patron Saint:May 2nd, St. Segundo day is celebrated, commemorating the transfer of the saint's remains to the Cathedral of Avila in 1594.
“La ronda de las Leyendas” (The legend’s round): During the first weekend of June, the city becomes the suitable scenery for the representation of the Legends of Ávila, staged by a dramatic group
Medieval Celebrations:The first weekend of September, the city recovers its medieval image. Stalls, haimas, incense scents, rosemary, cheeses, jongleurs, knights... occupy downtown squares.
St. Teresa de Jesús festivities:October 15th, the city honors its most universal daughter with a celebration in its honor that begins with the an opening speech from the Town Hall balconies. A solemn mass in the cathedral is celebrated, that finishes with a procession through the main city streets. Giants, “cabezudos” (figures with large heads) and dragons, cross the streets according to the tradition. Concerts, bullfights, fireworks and sport activities are developed throughout this festive week. (see more about Saint Teresa of Avila)
